Le jeune de Neil lance l'iPhone Games Company [ jeune de Neil

Electronic Arts Los Angeles studio head Neil Young recently announced he'd be leaving EA to embark on a new project - we now know what it is he'll be doing. Young's new endeavor, ng: moco, will focus on publishing games for the iPhone, and Kotaku spoke to Young all about his big plans, and reflected on his 11-year career with EA.

And yes, we also asked him what it's like being named Neil Young - and he's heard all your jokes before.

Young joined EA in 1997, where he ran the Origin studio in Austin, Texas - launchpad of Ultima Online. After that, he created and executive-produced Majestic, groundbreaking as it was one of the first PC games to incorporate ARG elements, calling players on the phone and sending them emails.

In 2002, Young helped overlook the Sims birthplace in Maxis, and has been studio head at EALA since 2004.

"Each of those studios has their own sort of unique culture," Young said. "EA has gone through a lot of changes as a company over those 11 years and... Riccitiello [has taken it] from the place it was at to the place it needs to go to. I think that change is probably the only constant in the world, and EA has been through its fair share of it."

So after riding 11 years of change with EA, what achievement is Young proudest of? "Probably the thing I take the most personal satisfaction out of is helping people grow and develop inside the organization, and sort of step up when I moved on to the next adventure," he said.

"In terms of my personal learning, [I got] a great deal of satisfaction working with Maxis, and getting the opportunity to understand how Will Wright worked, and how Maxis thought about developing software. It was really that sort of period at Maxis that changed a lot of my views on what the future of gaming needed to be," Young said.

Part of that vision for gaming's future, said Young, rests on the iPhone as the next-gen mobile gaming platform. "I am going to create a next-gen mobile games publisher, specifically and initially focused on the iPhone," said Young. That company will be called ng: moco ('Next-Gen Mobile Company).

The iPhone, says Young, provides entirely new opportunities to advance mobile gaming. "My sense is that the mobile games business has kind of been stagnant for a while, on one side because of the limitations of the handsets, and on the other side because of the way in which the business is structured as far as the relationship between the publishers and the carriers," he said.

"One of the great things... iPhone is doing, is changing the relationship between the people making games and the people buying them. It's removing that carrier that limits the potential of the business."

And Young is enthusiastic about where things can go from here. "The device itself is, from a performance standpoint, somewhere between a DS and a PSP, but unlike the PSP, it's got touch, the accelerometer, the camera, the microphone... it's location-aware, and from a usage standpoint it's always on, always with you and always connected to the network," he said.

"My sense is, the types of experiences that we're going to be able to build on that device and the devices that follow... are going to be really interesting and blow the doors off the business."

Young has now transitioned the majority of his responsibilities at EA to some of the folks whose professional development he reflected on as one of the high points in his career. Mike Verdu, general manager at EALA, will take over Young's studio head role, while Spore business head Lucy Bradshaw will continue to handle Maxis, reporting directly to group manager Nick Earl. Young also said he'll continue to function as an advisor for the time being.

"The new business is starting now," he aid. "When there are developers out there who think, 'hey, I have an awesome idea for the iPhone and it can only be done on that device', I want them to know they should be thinking about us."

Of course, we had to ask him - does he get a lot of jokes about his name? "Pretty much every day," said Young.

"It's fine; literally somebody makes a Neil Young reference every day, and it's probably funny... for the posters. I also have to say, I'm not sure where you got the photo you used [for me], but I look really pissed in that photo, and I was reading some of the comments and one guy was like, 'dude, that guy looks really pissed,'" Young said.

"I'm actually completely the opposite; I can be pretty intense, but I like to have fun. It's hard to make fun if you don't have fun, and I try to have as much fun as the next person."

So far, it looks good! But we won't know until we give it a whirl at one of the location tests for the game. The game will be playable next month (soon) in locations in both Tokyo and Osaka — Taito Hey! in Akihabara and Ikebukuro GIGO from July 10th to the 13th and Osaka's SEGA Avion from July 25th to the 27th. Announced fighters for both the Capcom side and the Tatsunoko side include Batsu Ichimonji from Capcom 2-on-2 fighter Rival Schools, Chun-li, Ryu, space knight Tekkaman, Gatchaman and Casshern. In the flier for the arcade location test, it says there will be a new character announced. So there's that to look forward to, too.

カプコン、ロケテストを東京と大阪で7月10日より [Game Watch Impress]

La Bande 2 De Roche A annoncé [ Plus De Bande De Roche

Harmonix has done and made Rock Band 2. The sequel will feature a new set list, and the RB2 bundle will feature "quieter, more realistic, and more reliable instruments" says Lead Designer Dan Teasdale. The good news for those who already own Rock Band is that all the songs you've purchases so far will be playable and supported in Rock Band 2. As far as Harmonix is concerned, there's no difference between "Rock Band 1 DLC" and "Rock Band 2 DLC" — we're just releasing awesome songs every week onto the Rock Band platform, all of which are playable by the Rock Band titles that support DLC," says Teasdale. The sequel will offer folks a new way to play the DLC they currently own, however. Sure, Rock Band 2 should come as no surprise, but it does sound like Harmonix is pushing things forward. Teasdale points out:

We've been working hard with Microsoft and Sony to develop a way to share content between games, and we're really happy that we'll be the first game to support fully functional cross-title DLC.

The game will get its official debut at this year's E3. Looking forward to it.
Rock Band 2: The Opening Act [IGN Thanks everyone who sent this in!]

Blizzard Worldwide Invitational: The Blizzard Museum Show Diablo 3 Concept Art [Blizzard Worldwide Invitational]

Between each section are large flat screen TVs showing looped movies for World of Warcraft and their other projects. Everything is here, from the novels to the artbooks and prints of the individual coverart for all their games. There’s even a replica of an orc and wolf statue which fans might recognise as identical to one that appeared on eBay a couple of months ago and a scaled down version of the one on Blizzard’s campus.

If you’re in Paris for the WWI, then this is a booth not to be missed and if you’re not, then feast your eyes on the gallery below to get a taste of what you’re missing.

Twenty-three new screenshots of Macross Ace Frontier have been gathered over at PSPHyper. Some information on the game has been released as well. Contrary to what was reported earlier, the game will allow you to pilot a Variable Fighter from all five works of the Macross series. More than 30 different characters will make an appearance in the game, with each pilot and mech containing their own upgradeable attributes to help you prepare for the 80+ missions planned. A animated gif showcases a "3-Stage Transformation," which will be done with the analog stick. "Characteristics" from the anime will act as aspects in the game, such as "Mechanism," "Love" and "Song." Blizzard Worldwide Invitational: Day One [Blizzard Worldwide Invitational]

Of course the Opening Ceremony wasn’t the end of the event; merely the beginning.

The ceremony itself took place on the main stage which was jam-packed with over 3,500 people and many more standing. Attended by press from all around the world as well as several special guests such as the VPs of Global Finance and Human Resources (yep, we were all humbled too). Hosted by pop star China and stand up comedian and film star Anthony Kavangh, the event saw Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime take to the stage and congratulate the gamers of Europe as well as reminding all those present that this is the first time an invitational has been held outside of Korea. He took us on a trip back in time to last year’s event in Seoul – a movie which includes a classic sound bite in the making from a teenaged Korean fan: “It’s fun because Blizzard made it.” Morhaime also commented on the Activision-Blizzard merger, provoking laughter when he said they’d ‘leveled up’.

The ceremony concluded in a musical fashion, in keeping with last year’s Korean pop idols. A troupe of Fire Dancers who performed to composer Russell Brower’s latest composition from the soundtrack of Diablo III. With the conclusion of the ceremony, the attendees scattered with the journos heading to a press event with leader designer Jay Wilson and VP/co-founder Frank Pearce.

Because of the top-secret-but-everyone-knows-about-it announcement about Diablo III, the panels weren’t announced until after the ceremony had concluded and suddenly the convention floor was flooded with plans detailing the numerous talks, several of which focus on, yes you guessed it, Diablo. There were also some dev panels focusing on the present and future classes of World of Warcraft and several StarCraft panels.

Interspersed between was the chance to watch ace European guild Nihilum raiding in Sunwell Plateau trying to down Kil’Jaeden or watching a huge selection of pro-gamers battling it out for top spot. Esports is a big part of any invitational so they are running nearly none stop over the two day event and each team of professional gamers was paraded on the main stage as part of the Opening Ceremony.

Split across two floors, there are also numerous booths such as the Blizzard Museum and the famous Darkmoon Faire, complete with life-sized scantily-clad Night Elf, a mail box, meeting stone and a turtle mount. The event sponsors – who include Intel and amBX – also had their own booths but it was the Starcraft II and Wrath of the Lich King areas which seemed to attract attention, with an even longer line than the one for the food vendors, although not quite as long as the one at the main entrance. Unfortunately the Wrath computers were suffering technical hitches meaning they kept freezing, very handy if you’re trying to explore Howling Fjord but what’s an event without a technical hitch or three? Check back tomorrow for hands on preview of both games.

Other fun activities were available such as an Armourer and the chance to get made up as a World of Warcraft character and have a photo taken against a suitably Azerothian background. But for many the biggest photo opportunity was the life-sized Frozen Throne, complete with Arthas’s creepy crown. Very in keeping, despite the lack of Wrath-related announcements.

Check back tomorrow when we’ll be bringing you more coverage from the WWI, including coverage of the epic closing ceremony and WoW and StarCraft Q and A.

Kotaku Originals: Recipe for a Douche Simulator [Kotaku Originals]

I know the headline and the picture should try to say something about the story, but in truth, neither are in any way related. I just wanted to quote from Crecente's brilliant backhanded compliment to Ultimate Band for the Wii, which he said is "quite a bit of fun" despite acknowledging it "looks like a recipe for a douche simulator." I also could not resist repubbing McWhertor's awesome mashup (left) of Old Snake and the PS2, which ran in a report about Old Reliable's declining contribution to the Console Wars. Suffice to say that's my new comment icon. Because Playstation 2 is no hero. Never was. Never will be. Just an old killer, hired to do some wet work.

This Samsung Xbox 360 TV Looks Fake (But It's Not A Bad Idea)
Sony's Stringer Foresees Profitability This Year
First Shots Of PS3 Video Download Service, Due In "Summer 2008"
Crave's ESA Departure Due To Impending Acquisition
Increasing PS3 Sales, Strong PSP Helped Sony Narrow Losses In FY08
Console War Has Changed, PS2 Declines In Old Age
Hands On With Ultimate Band: Disney's Peripheral-Free Band Game

More highlights after the jump.

Survey Leaks Guitar Hero IV Playable Rockers Including Hendrix, Ozzy, And Sting
Rock Band 2 To Get A Jolt Of AC/DC, Survey Says
Will Half-Life 2: Episode Three Be At E3? Are The MGS4 Cutscenes Too Long? [Tell Us Dammit]

Simple and no strings attached! This isn't some marketing survey or whatever. It's an emotional investment in you. Yes, we're interested in knowing you, Kotaku reader person. You probably know fucktons about us — more than you even want to, we're sure. But, hey, we'd like to know about you. That way you won't be some faceless blob — and we might feel a tinge of guilt when we ban your ass. Or not, because really we're incapable of human emotion. We think.

Earlier in the week I asked if I should take a break from GTAIV and start MGS4. Being the impatient bastard I am, I went ahead and started Metal Gear Solid 4. 'Porn pink' PSP used to sell PC eroge title

This is all a bit bizarre. Game retailer Toranoana in Akihabara, Tokyo's destination for things electronic, has a display set up within its shop with a "porn pink" PSP. It's got stickers and designs all for promotion of the PC eroge title Dokodemo suki shite itsudemo suki shite ("Love me wherever, Love me whenever").

With a name like that, it is a wonder why this title isn't on the PSP. You know, love wherever ... whenever ... sounds befitting. Anyway, this game isn't really for the PSP -- it's only on there for display purposes. We guess it's cheaper and space-saving to run a demo on a PSP than a PC.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Arise, Sirs Dan And Sam Houser? [Grand Theft Auto]

As savvy a piss-take on modern America as the Grand Theft Auto series has become, it's always worth remembering that it's not an American series. It's a British one. Rockstar are a British company (as were DMA), their founders, British. And with the GTA series nestled securely atop the gaming world in terms of both critical acclaim and popularity, Develop are wondering...when can we expect the series to start getting some serious recognition? Sure, they may have their tongue resting gently inside their cheeks when pondering how long til we see "the inevitable coming of Sir Sam Houser, or Dan Houser OBE", but the point itself is still valid! PSP will get direct access to the PSN Store this fiscal year

And it's about time too. Sony has revealed today, during a Strategy Meeting in Tokyo, that the PSP will finally be getting direct access to the PSN Store. That means no more having to deal with cables, memory cards or PCs. Good news for Mac lovers. It also means that you'll be able to download content from any WiFi hotspot. Pretty tasty.

There's no real release date, other than "this fiscal year," which could mean anything up to next April. There's a chance we'll be hearing more about this at E3 next month, so stay tuned for that.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Just How Many PLAYSTATION Network Registrants Are There? [PS3]

In today's Sony Computer Entertainment strategy meeting, Kaz Hirai also announced thrilling info about the PLAYSTATION Network. Blizzard Splashwatch Day Four - Lost Edition [Mystery]

Great, now you folks have me wide awake at 3 in the morning my time, hunting for clues like an over-the-hill Encyclopedia Brown. The Blizzard splash page has updated once again, revealing what certainly look like a pair of glowing eyes peering through the broken ice. Is it Diablo? Arthas? Or is it Hurley? The reason I ask is because the latest secret image has appeared in the CSS of the page, bearing the number 16. That makes the sequence so far 4, 15, 23, 16. Fans of the television show Lost know those numbers, along with the numbers 8 and 42, as the numbers that keep popping up throughout the show on lottery tickets, prescription bottles, etc. Will the next two numbers follow suit, or is Blizzard throwing us another curve? If it is the Lost numbers, what does it mean?

And where did those Vikings get off to? I cannot seem to find them anywhere?

Then there is the question of the latest rune, which I cannot seem to place. It looks like a solar system, doesn't it? I've been pouring over Blizzard stuffs but cannot for the life of me place it. I checked out various Diablo-fan forums to see if anyone had a clue before the sheer number of people fooling themselves into seeing things that weren't there made me too frustrated to continue. When you want something so badly you start deluding yourself you just need to take a step back and relax a little before people start looking at you funny.

Finally, here is the secret picture as it stands now, with four images in place. It's quite obvious to me now that we're dealing with an eggplant with tiny feet, a tail, and a mohawk.

Two more days and we'll know for sure, and then I can finally get some sleep. Damn you Blizzard. Damn you to hell.

Koller promises more first and third party games, less ports

It's undeniable that the PSP is in the middle of a serious software drought. Even John Koller, PSP's main marketing man in America, acknowledges that. Why the sudden drop of games, after the successful launches of games like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core? It's simple -- PSP wasn't performing too well earlier in its life cycle, and developers have only recently woken up to the incredible potential of the PSP as a platform. "I think what you're seeing is the result of decisions made 18 months ago, a development cycle ago when hardware sales weren't as strong as they are now and we were shifting demographics from that older, professional consumer to the teen group. There was kind of a little bit of a lull in hardware sales 18 to 20 months ago; you're seeing the results today from those decisions back then."

Since then, Koller and the Sony team has been going on a publisher "road show," and according to Koller, their efforts to envigorate the PSP development community has been successful. "Our worldwide studio team is actively developing titles for that platform and we've been on a road show amongst every, major third-party publisher -- which we actually just finished last week -- and have been talking to them about really how to publish on the PSP, and the level of excitement is really palpable."

When can we expect new game announcements? Well, that's up to each publisher. However, Koller promises that "we're going to see a very good lineup of quality franchise titles coming over to the PSP that are really unique." In fact, "you're not going to see many ports anymore, and I think that's good." We'd agree.

Read the complete interview at IGN.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Blizzard: Our Fans Get Angry, Yo [Blizzard]

Yeah, all fanbases have their eccentricities. Halo fans can be...boisterous. Metal Gear fans can have...interesting ideas on what merits good story-telling. Smash Bros fans can be...well, again, boisterous. But as passionate as those groups are, they haven't got shit on Blizzard fans. Those guys are crazy. And Blizzard knows it. Rob Pardo:

I love our Blizzard fans, they’re the best in the world. Capcom License Unreal Engine For Second Western-Developed Project [Capcom]

Capcom are all aboard that Unreal train. Having licensed the Unreal Engine 3.0 in February for use on a title being developed in North America (Dead Rising 2?), they've today licensed the engine for use in a second project, this one being worked on in Europe. No idea what that one could be (maybe a new IP!), but that's not the point! The point is a lot of Japanese developers talk about trying harder in the Western market. It's nice being reminded there's at least one doing something about it.

OSAKA, JAPAN (June 25, 2008) — Capcom Co., LTD., a leading developer and publisher of video games, with corporate headquarters located in Osaka, Japan, announced today that it has entered into an agreement to license Unreal Engine 3 from Epic Games, Inc. This is the second agreement between Capcom and Epic Games on licensing Unreal Engine 3.

"Unreal Engine 3 is a perfect fit for this project being developed in Europe, and is capable of ensuring a high-quality game experience. Not only does the development team have thorough knowledge of Unreal Engine 3, the general versatility of Unreal Engine 3 will fully meet the requirements particular to this project", said Keiji Inafune, Managing Corporate Officer, R&D Management Group of Capcom. "Unreal Engine 3 comes with a wide variety of functions required for next-generation game development, and it provides ease of use. On top of that, one of the major advantages is the well-established support system. We are delighted to enter into this license agreement, and have strong backup by Epic Games. With Unreal Engine 3, we can expect high development efficiency as well as high creativity within the development team."

"We’re very excited that Capcom has, once again, chosen to use Unreal Engine 3 for one of their upcoming games,” said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games.
One of my favorite games at last year's E3 was Natsume's Rune Factory: A Fantasy Harvest Moon for the Nintendo DS, a bizarre melding of Harvest Moon farming with action RPG. Now Natsume announces the imminent arrival of the sequel, Rune Factory 2, heading to the Nintendo DS this fall, featuring all of the monster-fighting, girl-wooing, crop-planting action of the original with an all-new storyline and the ability to eventually take on the role of your son, should the aforementioned wooing work out for you.

Natsume will be showing off the new title next month at their E3 booth, traditionally known as Paradise to Harvest Moon fans. We'll see if we can't stop by and give the old hoe a go.

NATSUME TO BRING THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED RUNE FACTORY 2: A FANTASY HARVEST MOON TO NINTENDO DS LATER THIS FALL

Sequel to the Critically Acclaimed RPG Makes Its First Public Appearance at E3 Next Month

Burlingame, Calif., June 24, 2008 – Natsume Inc., a worldwide developer and publisher of family-oriented video games, announced today that Rune Factory 2: A Fantasy Harvest Moon will be released for the Nintendo DS™ system later this fall. The company has also released the first screen shots of the game. The Rune Factory series is a unique blend of elements from the world of Harvest Moon and that of a fantasy RPG, offering Harvest Moon fans and traditional RPG players the best of both worlds.

“We are thrilled to announce that Rune Factory 2 is on its way to the U.S. The first Rune Factory title was a great success for us and our fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel,” said Hiro Maekawa, President and CEO at Natsume. "The Rune Factory series is a great expansion of the Harvest Moon universe; it takes the addictive Harvest Moon gameplay that fans know and love and combines it with the action and adventure of a fantasy RPG. Rune Factory 2 offers better graphics and even deeper gameplay than the first, along with many innovative new features.”

Rune Factory 2 is set several years after the first game. The evil Sechs Empire has been defeated, and the Kingdom of Norad is once again at peace.

Things may not stay that way for long, however, as dark premonitions foretell of dangers to come. It's up to player to uncover the source of these premonitions and bring peace to the kingdom once more.
Over the course of the story, players will build and develop a farm, befriend townspeople, raise monsters, take on quests, and find a wife.

Rune Factory 2 offers innovative Touch Screen controls, easy-to-use menus, and an all-new compelling storyline.

In a first for the Rune Factory series, the story of Rune Factory 2 is multigenerational. Players begin the game as Kyle, a strange man who comes to Alvarna Village. Eventually, players will take on the role of Kyle's child, opening up a whole new adventure. It's an innovative feature that allows players to follow the story of their family and the townsfolk over two generations!

Rune Factory 2 will make its first public appearance at next month’s E3 trade show in the Los Angeles area and will ship to retail later this fall.

For more information on Natsume’s titles, please visit www.natsume.com.

See Snake Bake A Cake [Metal Gear Solid]

Happy Birthday Sonic! [Birthday Bash]

Seventeen years ago to this day, Sonic spirited onto the Genesis/Mega Drive. And he did it with 'tude. That's right! SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog was released in North America and Europe on June 23, 1991. The game came out a month later in Japan. In his heyday, the blue hedgehog gave Mario as run for his money during the 16 bit generation. While SEGA seemed to have lost the plot in the last few years (human kissing anyone?), recent Sonic titles like the Sonic Team and Dimps developed Sonic Unleashed show promise of a return to form. And that is probably the best birthday present Sonic could ask for.

Sonic's Birthday [Sega Nerds]
